Durite urges transport operators to prepare for UK vehicle safety legislation expansion
Durite is advising fleet operators, OEMs, and bodybuilders to prepare for the likely extension of advanced vehicle safety legislation to trucks, following the UK government’s consultation on mandating new safety technologies under the Great Britain type approval framework.
The Department for Transport (DfT) is currently consulting on proposals to introduce up to 18 advanced safety technologies into UK law, aligning more closely with the EU’s General Safety Regulation (GSR2).
GSR2 consists of a comprehensive set of requirements designed to improve vehicle safety through both structural design and advanced technologies. Key areas include enhanced direct vision for drivers, collision avoidance systems, lane departure warning, intelligent speed assistance, and driver monitoring technologies.
In the EU, GSR2 applies across vehicle categories including cars, vans, buses, and heavy goods vehicles. Should similar requirements be adopted in Great Britain, N2 and N3 trucks would be expected to comply with enhanced direct vision and safety system standards.
Meanwhile, government impact assessments indicate that advanced safety technologies could prevent more than 758,000 collisions and 65,000 casualties in Great Britain over a 15 year period. Many operators – particularly those active in FORS and DVS environments – are already exploring how to enhance safety across their fleets.
‘The consultation shows a positive commitment to improving road safety,’ said Veronique Vanoli, marketing director at Durite, ‘and operators can take a gradual, informed approach. By understanding the technologies early, fleets can explore options that genuinely strengthen safety and operational efficiency.’
Durite’s intention is to empower fleets with the knowledge and tools they need to make well informed decisions. The company offers a broad portfolio of vehicle safety and vision systems designed to support safer operations and help fleets prepare for potential future requirements.
Solutions include high definition camera systems, multi-camera set ups, blind spot detection, and in-cab displays engineered specifically for demanding commercial environments. Its team also assists operators in reviewing their current safety and visibility systems, ensuring they understand where enhancements could offer the most value – whether for new vehicles or those already in service.
‘When integrated correctly, these systems can support compliance with emerging safety expectations, but more importantly, they improve everyday safety for drivers and other road users,’ Veronique added. ‘Our role is to guide operators through the landscape, offer honest advice, and provide future ready solutions that support long term confidence.’
As discussions around legislation continue, Durite remains committed to partnering with UK fleets – sharing expertise, building trust, and delivering reliable, innovation led safety technologies that protect people, reputations, and businesses.
